Its been two years since Covid pandemic started and though we are getting used to the new normal, however there overhangs a foreboding cloud of apprehension of a new variant to appear and once again unsettle us. In our strategy to fight Covid pandemic much importance was given to making protocols, guided by WHO & ICMR guidelines ,training the staffs and adhering to it. As we were gradually able to figure out ways to treat our patients , the 2nd wave had hit the country and the fatal nature of the variant left everyone aghast. The lives lost was beyond imagination and nothing had prepared us to deal with the insecurities related to drugs and oxygen scarcity. Prompt response from the government covid taskforce team helped in tiding over the scarcities but the lives lost led to a traumatic experience amongst the healthcare workers. Despite all uncertainties that shrouded the disease , the Department of critical care took every prudent steps to treat the patients and safeguard its team members , never faltering at any point despite all odds. Keeping abreast with all modalities of therapy ECMO was added to the department,s armamentarium of services and we could salvage few very critical Covid patients with high CTSS scores . The positive outcome was motivation enough to not give up the untiring effort . The transparent method of handling our patients along with routine communications with the near and dear ones kept the mood upbeat as they too felt a part of the treating team .
Moving ahead also meant keeping the academic curriculum going , hence the ISCCM affliated courses for doctors & nurses were run by the department and the year end saw a group of four nurses, training in critical care nursing course, clearing the exam with flying colours. Presentations on the virtual forum ,webinars and research were the other activities that the department was involved with .Three articles , two chapters on HOME OXYGEN THERAPY & PERI INTUBATION COMPLICATIONS & TREATMENT was written and a AIRWAY WORKSHOP was conducted with 70(seventy) participants, doctors and nurses, from local hospitals joining in.
Accolades have been showered and this only strengthens our believe that LIFE IS A CIRCLE OF HAPPINESS, SADNESS ,HARD TIMES and GOOD TIMES.IF we are going through hard times we need to keep faith that good times are on the way.
